2015-2016 School Year
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Railway Elementary School of Math, Science, and Technology’s 6th grade teachers would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to a new year at our school. In order for every student to be successful, all students in the 6th grade are required to complete homework on a daily basis.
Homework is an essential part of the school curriculum. It is not assigned “busy work,” but rather a necessary extension of the school day. Homework is also assigned to develop organizational skills, independent study habits, as well as to contribute to your child’s personal growth. When your child is absent, or fails to turn in homework, he/she will be required to complete all missing assignments in a timely manner. Incomplete or missing homework will affect your child’s grades and other privileges.
The student, parents/guardians, and teacher all play an important role in education, and therefore, have certain responsibilities in this process. The following are a few suggestions:
Student Responsibilities:
Ask questions in class, so the homework assignments are clearly understood
Care for and return all classroom materials taken home to complete assignments
Write down, organize, and complete ALL assignments to the best of your ability and return them ON TIME
Parents/Guardians Responsibilities:
Reinforce the importance of homework and its completion for the next day
Encourage your child to do quality and organized work on homework
Insist on proper use and care of school materials used for work completion
Demonstrate enthusiasm over work completed to expectations
Teacher Responsibilities:
Teach assignments prior to sending them home for independent practice
Grade and return homework and tests in a timely manner and inform the student and/or parents/guardians of missing work and tests
Encourage all students to do their best
The homework requirements should take the average 6th grader approximately 90 minutes to complete. Time will vary depending on your child’s ability and motivation. As the year progresses, the homework may become more difficult, due to the fact that the curriculum taught will become more complex. We understand that families have other commitments and interests, but it is very important to make daily completion of homework the highest priority.
The following is an approximation of what to expect for your child’s homework each day. The specific assignments will be on your child’s homework planner and should be checked daily:
Homework Planner signed by parent/guardian Monday-Friday
Language Arts 30 minutes
Math 30 minutes
Social Studies/Science 30 minutes
***Amount of time per subject will vary by teacher
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher at Railway Elementary School of Math, Science, and Technology (951) 943-3259.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Knox, Mr. McCann, Miss Rowbotham, Mrs. Stanier
